You are watching: 12 gauge slug drop at 100 yards

Found part Federal Premium 2 & 3/4 inche Barnes Expanders on sale and decided to provide them a shot in mine 12 ga Browning A-Bolt.They team awesome! All three shots in ~ 50 yds were touching. 1 inch over the bull. As soon as I relocated out to 100 yds, ns still had a great group - 3 rounds in a 1.5 customs group. My just surprise was the drop. I was 3 inches low at 100. A four inch drop native 50 to 100 yds was much more than i was expecting. In mine book, accuracy reigns supreme. So, I"m inclinded to stick with the Federals and also zero it in ~ 2 inches high at 50 and see what that does at 100.Anybody have similar results? Anybody have a flatter shoot slug out there that has given great results?

that sounds about right. Shotguns room a MAX 150 yard deer gun. That is with a scope, an excellent slugs, and much practice.

If ns were going to usage the gun because that deer hunting, I would zero it to have a preferably height over line of sight of 3" and also see what street that offered me because that a zero. Then you might be details that the trajectory of any shot at that distance or closer would be no more than 3" greater or reduced than your line the sight. For any shots in ~ a better distance, just estimate the drop and hold over accordingly.

  Sorry about that, JLP. I"ll shot to explain it a bit in different way for ya. :wink:Since the limit is mounted above the bore, the slug comes out listed below the line of sight (the heat of the crosshairs of your scope projected forward). The cheese comes out on a slightly increase trajectory and very first crosses the heat of sight at somewhere about 20-25 yards indigenous the muzzle. Then, it will certainly remain over the heat of sight till it comes earlier down to the heat of sight at say 125 yards (known together your "zero distance").During the first 20-25 yards of flight, the slug will certainly be below the heat of sight by about 2.5" or less. Indigenous 25 out to 125 yards, the slug will certainly be over the heat of sight. At 125 yards (in our example) the slug will have dropped back down to the heat of sight.IF we zero the scope at together a distance (say about 125 yards) so the the MAXIMUM height of the slug above the line of vision is 3" at around the 2/3 allude (roughly 75 yards), then the slug will be no better than 3" above or below the heat of sight all the means from the muzzle to the zero street (say 125 yards). Because that shots greater than 125 yards, the slug will be below the line of sight. Any shots taken at higher than 125 yards will require you to organize over the intended suggest of impact. The lot of holdover will depend on how much farther 보다 125 yards the shooting is.So, to use this method, collection up a target in ~ say 125 yards and adjust your scope to hit the bullseye at the distance. Then, move your target to around 70-75 yards from the muzzle, aim at the bullseye and also see wherein you hit. If the cheese hit higher than 3" above the bullseye, then you require to relocate your "zero distance" closer 보다 125 yards. If the cheese hit much less than 3" over the bullseye, climate you might move your zero distance higher than 125 yards. The last zero distance you finish up through will count on the ballistic properties and initial muzzle velocity that the slug. A quick sabot cheese will give you a much longer "zero distance" 보다 a slow full bore diameter slug.I expect this explanation helps. If not, take it 2 Budweisers and call me in the morning.
